Having trouble find hypoallergenic mattress covers? People with allergies and multiple chemical sensitivities have more criteria to take into consideration when buying allergy free bedding.
In addition to choosing what type of allergy proof bedding works best with our decor, what we can best afford, and which products are likely to last the longest, we must factor in whether or not the items are truly hypoallergenic.
If you are one of those people and are looking for a good mattress and allergy free bedding that won't make you sick, I hope our research can be helpful to you!
When it comes to hypoallergenic mattress covers, the Luna Premium Hypoallergenic Zippered Bed Bug-Proof Mattress Encasement seems to get nearly-consistent outstanding customer reviews.
According to the manufacturer, the zippered bedding encasement completely surrounds your mattress, making it impossible for bed bugs to penetrate and burrow inside it. Additionally, the product boasts "Airflow Technology," which allows the mattress to "breathe" despite the fact that it is fully encased.
One of the interesting innovations with regard to this product is the triple-sided zipper, ensuring that bed bugs and other pests are completely denied entry.
Despite these advantages, one customer noted that the product is water-resistant but not completely waterproof. Another customer writes that he has serious allergies, and since switching to the Luna Premium he sleeps much more soundly with far fewer allergic reactions. Yet another customer reported her allergies "greatly reduced" after switching to this mattress cover.
One of the better-reviewed allergy mattress pads is the Natural Comfort Waterproof Mattress Pad with Super Absorbency Deep Pocket. The manufacturer boasts that it is entirely waterproof, that it "breathes," is noiseless, and provides excellent comfort.
The Natural Comfort pad is treated with anti-mite and anti-dust technology; this made me wonder if it was, in fact, sprayed with chemicals. From the customer reviews, though, I have to conclude that this is not the case.
Several mentioned being allergic or chemically sensitive, and none mentioned fumes or out-gassing problems with the Natural Comfort product. One customer mentioned that it survived a home birth—an impressive feat for any mattress pad!
Another mattress pad that receives excellent reviews is the Sleep Safe Bed Bug, Dust Mite, and Allergen-Proof Zip Cover from Eco Living Friendly (ELF) brands. One customer raved about its being paper-thin, yet surprisingly durable.
He references the fully-locking zipper and the fact that neither bed bugs nor mites could possibly penetrate it. Yet, another reviewer claimed that it ripped immediately!
Sometimes two side-by-side customer reviews can be such polar opposites that one feels the need to experience the product for oneself.
Not all allergy free mattresses and bedding are truly hypoallergenic. Unfortunately, some vendors know that the word itself is a selling point, and add it rather carelessly to their sales materials.
A truly hypoallergenic mattress cover, pad, or pillow should provide years of comfort and no allergy or sensitivity issues at all. If you're checking out an online vendor, I recommend making sure the website offers free and unedited customer reviews; these are much more reliable than sales copy!
One of the best-reviewed hypoallergenic mattresses we found is the Sleep Innovations Sure Temp Memory Foam Mattress. According to one reviewer, although it didn't exactly "change his life," it was a very comfortable and thoroughly hypoallergenic, allergy proof mattress.
Another claimed to have enjoyed his "best sleep in years" on the Sleep Innovations product. Yet another reviewer was pleasantly surprised upon opening the package. She fully expected to be overwhelmed by a chemical smell, the best-reviewed "hypoallergenic" mattress status notwithstanding; instead, she writes, "I smelled nothing!"
Among the hypoallergenic pillows I looked at, one of the top-reviewed products was the Iso Cool Side Sleeper Polyester Pillow with Outlast Cover by Sleep Better. The cool feel of the pillow is apparently one of its strongest selling points, but it is also highly hypoallergenic and fully machine washable.
Its two-inch gusset provides excellent support and a natural alignment of the neck and head. On customer called it "the best pillow I've ever owned." Another called it "definitely not 'cool,' but certainly 'less hot.'" Another reviewer was rather disappointed; the pillow failed to stay cool throughout the night. None of the reviewers had anything negative to say related to the product's hypoallergenic qualities.
As you can see, the process of finding good quality allergy free bedding requires a bit of patience and research; however you will benefit from this time well spent in a much sounder and more comfortable sleep on your allergy proof bedding!
